Environment

Our environmental programme supports initiatives which enable communities to develop resources, infrastructure and education programmes which raise awareness of the importance of natural resources for building sustainability at community level

A partnership with Thanda Aftercare and Aqualima Trust for Sustainable Technology in rural KZN is supporting the development of community-based food groups which provide fresh vegetables to local children and improve food security as well as economic opportunities by establishing food co-operatives.

At Woza Moya in Ixopo KZN, young children enjoy exploring the water-saving ‘tippy-taps’. Following the installation of a rainwater harvesting system at nearby Dingiziwe High School, the project is also working in partnership to support the school’s development as a Water, Sanitations and Hygiene (WASH) school.  It is hoped that once local community members have seen the benefits of improved water, sanitation and hygiene they will develop WASH initiatives of their own.

Ndumo Community Project, an initiative of Tshwane University of Technology’s Departments of Nature conservation and Crop Sciences at Ndumo Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, offers an Environmental Education Awareness project to 19 schools around the reserve with support from the Foundation. Learners who take part in the programme say that it has opened their eyes to the importance of the natural world around them.
